Westminster Kingsway College offers a unique opportunity to study in central London for vocational qualifications that are tailored to employment opportunities. The College offers a relaxed environment to study and great facilities at our main College Centres.

About the course

Successful completion of this course could enable you to progress onto a Higher Education course. It offers the opportunity to study a range of Social Science topics and one of the following specialist modules: European Studies, Freedoms Under the Law, Government & Politics, History or Psychology. It is specifically designed for speakers of other languages, with support for writing academic English integrated throughout the course. On the course you will learn study skills such as note taking, essay writing, reading and research, preparation for exams and oral presentation. You will be supported throughout the course by a personal tutor who will also give you guidance in applying for Higher Education courses.
 
Modes of Attendance:
September to July: 1 year - 15 hours per week
3 days per week (9 - 5): Timetable depends on the options chosen.
 
24+ Advanced Learning Loans: If you are aged 24 or over, from September student loans are being introduced to support learners aged 24 and over undertaking advanced courses like Access to Higher Education. If you are starting a course this year, you may qualify for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan which can help you to pay the tuition fees charged by the College. What are the entry requirements?

This course is suitable for students aged 21 or over. Applicants aged 19 or 20 will also be considered if you have experience outside full-time education, for example through work or travel. Applicants will be assessed through application, interview and tests in English and Maths.   Important information: Applicants who wish to study these subjects and whose first language is English should instead apply for the Humanities and Social Sciences programme.   For International students, you will need to have completed your secondary school education (two A Levels or equivalent) to apply for the one year Access to Higher Education Diploma. You will also need to have an IELTS score of 5.5 with no skill below 5.0, or equivalent English qualification. International students will be assessed on application through an online interview process which will take into consideration all of your education achievements and relevant work experience.

How will I be assessed?

You will do a variety of coursework assignments, tests and examinations throughout the course, which are set and marked by your teachers and externally moderated by OCN London. Assessment is continuous over the whole year and is based on a number of set pieces of work such as essays, projects, presentations and tests. Each piece offers 3 credits and for successful completion students must gain 60 credits, at least 45 at level 3.
 

What could I do next?

Once you have completed your Access to Combined Studies Diploma, you can progress to a Higher Education Degree at a University or College. This course prepares students for a very wide range of degree courses. In the past students have progressed to the following: Accounting; Childhood Studies; Criminology; History; Human Resources; International Relations; Law; Linguistics; Politics; and Psychology. You should check requirements for specific degree courses – different Higher Education institutions may have quite different entry requirements for similar courses.
