About the course
Successful completion of this course could enable you to progress onto a Higher Education course. It offers the opportunity to study a range of Social Science topics and one of the following specialist modules: European Studies, Freedoms Under the Law, Government & Politics, History or Psychology. It is specifically designed for speakers of other languages, with support for writing academic English integrated throughout the course. On the course you will learn study skills such as note taking, essay writing, reading and research, preparation for exams and oral presentation. You will be supported throughout the course by a personal tutor who will also give you guidance in applying for Higher Education courses.
Modes of Attendance:
September to July: 1 year - 15 hours per week
3 days per week (9 - 5): Timetable depends on the options chosen.
24+ Advanced Learning Loans: If you are aged 24 or over, from September student loans are being introduced to support learners aged 24 and over undertaking advanced courses like Access to Higher Education. If you are starting a course this year, you may qualify for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan which can help you to pay the tuition fees charged by the College. Visit

How will I be assessed?
You will do a variety of coursework assignments, tests and examinations throughout the course, which are set and marked by your teachers and externally moderated by OCN London. Assessment is continuous over the whole year and is based on a number of set pieces of work such as essays, projects, presentations and tests. Each piece offers 3 credits and for successful completion students must gain 60 credits, at least 45 at level 3.
