01 June 2012

Westminster Salon Success for Hospitality and Chef students title=

Westminster Kingsway College Professional Chef and Hospitality students took part in the Westminster Salon and Major Series competition in association with the Craft Guild of Chefs and were rewarded with medals in all categories including static display classes and live competitions.

The competition took place at the Westminster Kingsway College Victoria Centre with winner’s medals being presented by Christopher Basten, Executive Chef from the London Marriott Hotel County Hall and a member of the Craft Guild of Chefs Culinary Academy.

Each year Major International and the Craft Guild of Chefs organise the Major Culinary Challenge and Mini Series of Display Classes. The national competitions are open to junior and senior chefs of varying skill levels from any type of outlet and take place throughout the year at venues around the country.

A host of live and static display classes are held including pastry and restaurant skills, as well as the Hot Live Culinary Challenge, which allows 50 minutes to prepare and cook two individual chicken dishes. Westminster Kingsway College students won a total of 15 Gold medals, 16 Silver medals and 19 Bronze medals in the salon event held at the College.

At the Salon, the Hot Live Culinary Challenge was won by Professional Chef Diploma second year student, Antonia Morosi who was awarded the Gold Best in Class. Antonia said: “I was really surprised to win the competition. I was more relaxed than in previous competitions which obviously helped but the 50 minutes goes so quickly. I think this type of competition is great for us as students – it helps our CV, builds our confidence and gets you thinking about different recipes.”

Kristian Shields also won a gold medal in the Cocktails category of the competition. Kristian said: “We had to make two non-alcoholic cocktails using the Major fruit bases and so I was pleased to win. I am studying on the Professional Chef Diploma but I also like to be involved in front of house service as well. The competitions have been great fun and have built our competitive spirit.”
