Westminster Kingsway Culinary Arts graduate wins NZ-UK Link Culinary Challenge

Recent Westminster Kingsway Culinary Arts graduate, Ben Murphy, has won the 2010 NZ-UK Link Foundation Culinary Challenge, which was held at the College’s Victoria Centre.
Ben, who is a Commis Chef at The Berkeley, won a three-week trip to New Zealand. While there he will get the chance to work in top restaurants and visit award winning vineyards as well as explore New Zealand.
The winning menu included, Langoustine Tortellini, Seared Scallop, Langoustine and Saffron Sauce; Roast Venison Loin, Spiced Pickled Pear, Beetroot Puree, Celeriac and Kumara Fondant Terrine, Chocolate Infused Jus; and Manuka Honey Soufflé, Lavender & Yogurt Ice-cream and Pollen Tuille.
Simon Stocker, Westminster Kingsway College Chef Lecturer, said: “Once again the standard at this year’s NZ-UK Link Challenge was extremely high. Ben Murphy joins a long line of Westminster Kingsway Alumni who are distinguishing themselves in industry competitions nationwide and as role models for current students of the College.”
Ben was awarded his prize by Peter Gordon, New Zealand celebrity Chef of ‘The Providores and Tapa Room Restaurant’ and the founder of the awards. Peter Gordon said: “We received an overwhelming selection of high calibre entrants, making it extremely hard to narrow down the choice to just eight finalists. This is an indication of how highly respected thecompetition is amongst teachers and employers around the UK in the advancement of their junior staff and students.”
