News - Mental Health Awareness Day

Westminster Kingsway hosts its first Mental Health Awareness Day

Westminster Kingsway College organised its first Mental Health Awareness Day at the King’s Cross and Victoria Centres for both staff and students to mark International Mental Health Day.

The two day event was organised by the College’s Individual Learning Department and Student Support Department to raise awareness amongst student and staff about how to look after themselves amidst the pressures of modern life.

Visitors were taught how they could enhance their mental health, including healthy eating and different ways to enjoy life and avoid stress. The Westminster Early Intervention Team also attended; helping visitors understand the different forms illegal drugs could take as well as what help is available should they, a friend or family member be suffering from addiction.

Workshops were also organised by the Individual Learning Department for students to drop in and talk to someone about issues that are possibly affecting them.

The highlight of the event was a competition for best smile and frown where willing models posed for the camera in an attempt to win an iPod and gift vouchers. Winners will be announced on the new mental health page on the student intranet, Nexus.

Josef Fischer (pictured left), Westminster Kingsway College Access & Mental Health Co-ordinator, said: "This is the first of the Individual Learning Department’s Enrichment Projects for this academic year and what we hope will be an annual event. It has been a great success and we are happy that visitors enjoyed themselves as well as learned new things about their wellbeing."
