Battersea
Technology College pupil Pamela Black has been studying
catering at Westminster Kingsway College one day a week
for over a year. She also took up the offer of two weeks
work experience at the college's restaurant The Vincent
Rooms. During this time she excelled working alongside
professional chefs.
Inspired by her course
at Westminster Kingsway College, Pamela is now intending
to become a full-time student next year on the Professional
Chef diploma course.
The option to study catering
at WKC was given to year 10 students in local schools
as part of the 'Increased flexibility' scheme run by
the government. Pamela decided to do it as she had an
interest in cooking and thought it would be fun.
The chance to learn to
cook at one of the countries top catering colleges by
some of the best chef lecturers in the country is an
invaluable experience. Pamela and the rest of the group
were inspired by chef lecturer Mark Gaultier; Pamela
began to show a real talent and confidence in the kitchen
that caught the eye of many of the chef lecturers.
Mark Gaultier said, "Pamela
is a future star. We look forward to seeing her next
year as a full-time student on the Professional Chef
Diploma".
Pamela said, "I
have always liked helping out with cooking at home.
I wasn't sure at first about studying catering but since
Mr Gaultier took over I have learnt so much and realised
I am good at it. Mr Gaultier helped us to enjoy it and
think for ourselves. He had a lot of patience with us.
I know now that this is what I want to do with my life".
Pamela has also
been involved in Future Chef, part of the Springboard
UK national schools programme. It is a national four-stage
competition designed to introduce young people to cooking,
helping to develop their skills. It also helps to build
direct work experience in the industry and provide expert
advice on the career options and entry routes available
to students. Pamela won the south London heat against
entries from three other schools. She had a £5
budget and had to produce two courses for two people.
