Mary Girling presented with Apprentice of the Year Runner-up Award

Tuesday 14 March 2017

24-year-old apprentice chef Mary Girling is no stranger to the academic spotlight as she is now a two-time award winner for her culinary skills. In a special presentation this week, Mary finally received her belated award after severe weather prevented her attendance at the official ceremony held in London with her fellow nominees last month.

Mary was pleased to be named this year’s runner-up and has expressed her personal goal to complete up to level three of Westminster Kingsway College’s Hospitality Apprenticeship training. She is currently employed as an apprentice chef at St John’s College, Cambridge and has shared how she fully enjoys her work and development opportunities at St John’s.

In the longer term, Mary has said that she sees herself as a business owner as well as a chef. She would like to open a themed bakery offering a taste of traditional cultures from across the globe.
“I started out doing food prep in a local pub,” Mary says. “My mum bakes and has inspired me. It’s important for me to complete three levels of the training so that I can go on and start my own business.”

In November last year, Mary was named Professional Apprentice Chef of the Year at Westminster Kingsway College. The college is a training leader in hospitality culinary arts. Students aged 16 and over are invited to apply for our apprenticeship programmes.
