Mike
Magras
It wasn’t just
the students that were celebrating on A-Level results day. College lecturer Mike
Magras was also celebrating his B grade in Spanish.
He was bitten by the Latin
bug after going on a trip to Cuba and loving the national language. For Mike,
learning the language at the college was a natural step. “The College
provide everyone with an opportunity to learn.” He praises both staff and students
for being very supportive. “I had Spanish students only talking to
me in Spanish when they saw me.” He also empathised with the students as he
did his coursework and sat through the oral and written exams.
A big language
boost came from living and working in London itself! “Carnivals and festivals
that were held in London gave me a chance to listen and practice Spanish in a
fun environment, my favourite being the Carnaval del Pueblo where I didn’t
speak English for the whole day!”
Mike is thinking of studying Latin American
Studies later in the future but for now the languages continue as he is now learning
Portuguese. As he says, “Westminster Kingsway College
me ilena con alegria.”
