ABOUT THE COURSE

 
The Foundation Diploma in Applied Science is the core qualification studied in the first year of a Level 3 Programme of Study in Applied Science. It is the perfect qualification for students who want to continue their studies in science beyond Level 2 or GCSE and provides a solid foundation of learning across all science disciplines before an optional pathway is chosen in year two. 
 
The Foundation Diploma combines the key areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics to give you a well-rounded practical and theoretical understanding of the Applied Sciences, focusing on Forensic Science.
 
A significant amount of time will be spent developing your practical laboratory skills, which will allow you to progress with confidence into technical-based employment or Higher Education science programmes.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

During the first year units you may study include:

  • Principles and Applications of Science I
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Science Investigation Skills
  • Laboratory Techniques and their Application
  • Contemporary Issues in Science
  • Physiology of Human Body Systems
  • Diseases and Infection

The Foundation Diploma (Year 1) provides students with underpinning knowledge to allow them to study more specialised units in Year 2. Upon successful completion of Year 1, students will progres onto Year 2, where units are more focused on Forensic Science. 

Some of the units you may study are:

  • Forensic evidence, collection and analysis
  • Foresnic Fire Investigation
  • Forensic Traffic Collision Investigation
  • Biomedical Science

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language, Maths and Science or an equivalent Level 2 qualification at Merit (and Functional Skills in English and Maths at Level 2/GCSE English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above)
  • A reference from your previous school/college

All applicants must have an initial assessment and interview to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

The course is assessed throughout the year using a vareity of methods. You will be sitting two formal examinations, written essays and assignments, and labaratory testing and report writing.

Each unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and you will receive an overall grade for the qualification.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

School Leavers

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31 August in the year you begin your course, and have been resident in the UK/EU/EEA for the past 3 years, it will be free. Some courses will have other costs associated, such as for materials and trips. WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

After successful completion of Year 1 Foundation Diploma you may wish to continue onto the Extended Diploma (Year 2). This will then provide you with 3 A-level equivalent qualification.

After completion of Year 2 you can go onto University, Degree apprenticeships and employment. Some of the routes you can go into are:
