ABOUT THE COURSE

If you are interested in art and design, this course provides an opportunity to explore, develop and test your creativity with stimulating and demanding study. During the course, you will experiment with a wide variety of new materials allowing you to build your technical skills whilst developing your critical and contextual research skills.

You will learn a range of disciplines such as model-making, illustration, creative advertising and graphic design. Drawing and creativity are central to your study in the visual arts, which will be underpinned by an understanding of cultural and historical influences. You will also be introduced to relevant software to support you in your future career.

This course is accredited by UAL.

Extended Diplomas have two one-year programmes. You need to finish the first year before moving on to the second.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The Art and Design - Level 3 Diploma (UAL) is the largest qualification in the suite. It is equivalent in size to 3 A Levels and is delivered over two years of full-time study. This qualification is comprised of two units:

  • Unit 1: Diagnostic investigation in Art and Design: This diagnostic investigation allows you to explore a wide range of art and design disciplines as part of their journey to, or reinforcement of specialist practice.
  • Unit 2 Specialist practice in Art and Design: You will demonstrate your learning by responding to a creative brief that is set and marked by the UAL Awarding Body. You will further develop your skills and knowledge of the creative process in art and design but within a particular area of practice, such as fashion, photography or graphics. You will demonstrate an increased level of autonomy and identify a self-initiated project in which you can demonstrate the culmination of learning across both units of the qualification.

This qualification is ideal for those who want to explore a range of art and design disciplines (Unit 1), and then further enhance their knowledge and skills in a chosen specialist practice (Unit 2).

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language or Maths Level 2 qualification at Merit (and Functional Skills in English at Level 2/GCSE English Language at grade 4 or above)
  • One of your GCSE must include an art subject
  • Portfolio of your art and design work A reference from your previous school/college

All applicants must have an interview to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

The course is assessed throughout the year and with an end-of-course portfolio.

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31st August prior to the start date of your course and you have the legal right to remain in the UK for the duration of your programme then your study with us will be free. Please see here for the documents you will need to show us.

Adults - Level 3

If you will be aged 19 to 23 prior to the start date of your course, and do not already have a full Level 3 qualification, you may be eligible for a Level 3 entitlement, in which case your study with us will be free. If you are older, or already have a Level 3, we have many other Level 3 courses that are also free to study. Otherwise, you will have to pay the fees yourself or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

The primary purpose of this course is to aid you in progressing to further or higher learning. However, the transferable skills and knowledge developed as part of this qualification will support you in progressing into appropriate entry-level roles or higher apprenticeships in the creative sector. Steph Lee-Vae

Profile Overview: 

Steph Lee-Vae has experience of project management, strategic leadership, research initiatives and curriculum innovation. Steph is a skilled practitioner with students from versatile backgrounds in various roles, adopting a humanistic style of teaching in FE & HE setting; delivering on Level 1/2/3 and HE provisions. Steph has worked internationally delivering teacher training programmes. In delivery, Steph adopts methodologies to support individuals to allow achievement and high aspirations to be reached, having high success rates. Adopts a team approach, ensuring to create a positive and collaborative working ethos. Continuously updates subject knowledge through industry, training and research feeding this into the educational setting. A highly creative & ambitious individual whom, likes to drive innovation and technological development, key specialist areas being digital arts and technologies.

Shirley Dixon

Shirley Dixon is a creative practitioner with many years experience as an artist and designer-maker, since graduating from the Royal College of Art.  

An advocate of lifelong learning, Shirley has taught in the Further Education sector for over 18 years and has facilitated workshops for art organisations in conjunction with her exhibited work. 

Shirley regularly participates in open studios, open calls and art fairs. Her specialisms are Constructed Textiles and Fine Art: drawing, painting and printmaking.


Jody Roberts

Jody joined Westminster Kingsway College in 2003. Alongside teaching on a part-time basis, she has worked on numerous freelance projects including designing soft furnishing for Heals and interior fabrics for luxury yachts. She also worked for many years as a freelance fashion print designer.

With an awareness of re-working and re-using fabrics. Jody has recently retrained in embroidery design, quilting and patchwork techniques, Jody is keen to instil sustainable techniques and a consideration of environmental impact into her teaching and own practice. Jody is highly qualified with a BA (Hons) in Textile Design, an MA in Printed Textiles and a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education.


Nikki Mansell

With a dynamic blend of educational expertise and extensive leadership experience, Nikki brings a wealth of knowledge to the role of Head of School at Westminster Kingsway. Holding a Master's degree in Art and Design and a Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design for print and new Media, Nikki started their journey as an educator, dedicating 15 years to shaping young minds.

Over this distinguished teaching career, Nikki spent seven years specialising in Creative A Levels, honing a keen understanding of nurturing artistic talent. Their commitment to educational excellence led to an appointment as a Pearson Moderator, where they have played a pivotal role in maintaining and enhancing academic standards.

Driven by a passion for leadership and a desire to effect broader change, Nikki transitioned into management roles. With three years of experience as Head of School for Creative Arts at The Bedford College Group prior to their current position, they demonstrated a remarkable ability to lead teams, foster innovation, and drive results.

Not content with past achievements, Nikki has continually invested in their professional development. They hold qualifications from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and have earned the National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership (NPQSL), seamlessly bridging management theory and practical application.

As the Head of School at Westminster Kingsway, Nikki is dedicated to nurturing a vibrant educational environment, empowering both students and staff to excel and thrive in an ever-evolving world of learning and innovation. Their journey is a testament to their unwavering commitment to educational excellence and leadership.


Robyn Hopkins

Robyn is a practicing artist who gained her MA in illustration in 2023 at Camberwell College of Art, where her primary study surrounded Welsh folklore, myth and storytelling. Continuing her practice Robyn is currently writing and illustrating books and comics as well as working freelance. Robyn joined the teaching staff at Westminster Kingsway College in 2022, teaching both digital and traditional illustration techniques. Before joining WestKing, Robyn taught art within a Welsh speaking primary school and SEN college. This informed her teaching practice well as she was able to develop teaching strategies to facilitate and meet the needs of individual learners.     


Rachel James

Rachel teaches 3D Art and Design and Level 2 and 3 Art and Design courses in the well-equipped 3D workshop at Kings Cross. Rachel completed a Fine Art Degree at Cardiff Uni in the 90's specialising in sculpture.

Rachel went on to work within the creative industries across events, film, theatre, and TV. Later she started her inflatable design company; notably creating interactive breathing window displays for Harvey Nichols and Selfridges, the butterfly tunnel at London Zoo and her art installations.

She got into teaching by facilitating various workshops during artist residencies and visiting lecturer posts going on to complete an MA in Art and Design in Education at the Institute of Education London in 2013, Rachel achieved her PGCE in 2019.

She currently creates jewellery alongside teaching and brings her wealth of experience and creative passion to the classroom to engage students in experimental ways of working with a variety of sources and materials - including inflatables from time to time! Rachel enjoys helping build students’ portfolios with interior design and architectural models, product designs, public art, lighting and more.
