About The Course

This course is validated by the University of the Arts, London (UAL) and has been designed to help you pursue a career in the music industry, giving you intermediate skills in performance, composition and related activities. Building on your existing skills, you will be required to work at a semi-independent level, as you develop knowledge and experience in composition, mixing, recording, live performance and production.

Our music laboratories have industry-standard equipment, including Apple iMacs, equipped with Logic, Ableton, Midi Keyboards and fully functional recording studios with state-of-the-art mixing desks. There are opportunities to participate in live performances and you will study topics related to the music industry. There will also be visits, trips and work experience.

What Will I Study?

Topics covered can include:

  • Introduction to music performance
  • Introduction to music production
  • Listening skills for music performance and production
  • Exploring music composition
  • Contextual research for music performance and production
  • Music performance skills and practice
  • Music production skills and practice
  • Music performance and production project

What Will I Need?

You will need:

  • Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English Language and Maths or an equivalent Level 1 qualification at Merit (and Functional Skills in English and Maths)
  • A reference from your previous school/college
  • A successful audition

How Will I Be Assessed?

The course is assessed throughout the year and with an end-of-course portfolio.

What Will It Cost?

School Leavers

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31 August in the year you begin your course, and have been resident in the UK/EU/EEA for the past 3 years, it will be free. Some courses will have other costs associated, such as for materials and trips. Adults

Entry Level, Level 1, Level 2
If you will be aged 19 or older on 31 August in the year you begin your course, and have been resident in the UK/EU/EEA for the past 3 years, your course may be free, depending on your circumstances. What Can I Do After?

This course will help you to move on to higher level courses, specialising in music performance or music production.
