About the Course
This is a new Access to Higher Education Diploma that enables students to progress onto study a range of Science and Engineering courses.
What you will study
You will study Science Applications, Maths and Physics. You will learn study skills such as note taking, essay writing, reading and research, preparation for exams and oral presentation. You will be supported throughout the course by a personal tutor who will also give you guidance in applying for Higher Education courses.
The list below shows the range of units offered on the programme. The units offered are reviewed periodically to meet the interests and progression aims of the students on the course and may change slightly.
Module Units available:
All units are Level 3. Level 3 units are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. To pass the Diploma you must achieve 60 credits.
You will do a variety of coursework assignments, tests and examinations throughout the course, which are set and marked by your teachers and externally moderated by OCN London.
Successful completion of this Access to Higher Education Diploma could enable you to progress onto study a range of Science and Engineering courses, including Higher Education programmes in Physics or Engineering: Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic, Civil, Chemical, Aeronautical and Mining or Digital Technology.
This course is suitable for students aged 21 or over. Applicants aged 19 or 20 will also be considered if you have experience outside of full-time education, for example through work or travel. Applicants will be assessed through application, interview and tests in English and Maths.
For International students, you will need to have completed your secondary school education to apply for the one year Access to Higher Education Diploma. You will also need to have an IELTS score of 5.5 with no skill below 5.0, or equivalent English qualification. International students will be assessed on application through an online interview process which will take into consideration all of your education achievements and relevant work experience.
Ideally you should also have some knowledge of a science-based subject or have a science-based GCSE or equivalent qualification.
GCSE requirements for Access applicants:
In order to progress to certain Higher Education courses, you may require GCSE English and/or GCSE Maths to fulfil your university entry requirements.
Ideally you will already have GCSE Maths and English at grade 9 - 4. However we understand that not all students meet this requirement and so you will be considered for an Access course if you have one GCSE at grade A*-C in Maths or English and the other at grade D.
A GCSE or functional skills course will be offered as an additional option for the Access course - please note that some GCSE classes may be delivered in the evening.
If you don't have any GCSEs or equivalent qualifications then we will be able to recommend you for another course based on the results of your initial assessment at interview.
