About the Course

This course offers adult learners the opportunity to complete a science based course at Level 2 alongside GCSE Maths and English OR Functional Skills Maths and English.

Your suitability for GCSE will be assessed within the first 4 weeks of your course.

What you will study

The list below shows the range of units normally offered on the programme. The units offered are reviewed periodically to meet the interests and progression aims of the students on the course and may change slightly.

All units are level 2. To pass the Diploma you must achieve 39 credits.

Chemistry

  • Chemistry and Our Earth - 6 credits available
  • Science in Medicine - 4 credits available

Biology

  • Biology and Our Environment - 6 credits available
  • The Living Body - 6 credits available
  • Healthy Living - 3 credits available

Physics

  • Energy and Our Universe - 6 credits available
  • Applications of Physical Science - 5 credits available

Maths

  • Using Mathematical Tools in Science and Technology - 3 credits available
Access Method

You will complete a number of assignments throughout the course of the year. These will be assessed by your teachers and externally moderated by the examination board.

Progression

This course is recommended for learners who wish to apply for a Level 3 course the following year such as BTEC Level 3 in Applied Science. With a strong emphasis on science, this course also acts as a sound foundation to successfully completing the Access to Health and Human Science, Access to Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, Access to Nursing, Access to Science and Engineering and Access to Midwifery courses.

Please note, that there is no automatic progression to Level 3, this will depend on your GCSE status and on your successful completion of the Level 2 course.

Entry Requirement

Four GCSEs at grade 3 (grade D) or above or equivalent Level 1 qualification with Functional Skills in Maths and English at Level 1 and a good reference. Please be aware that it is a condition of the course that you attend Maths and English GCSE classes and sit the examinations at the end of the year if you have not previously gained a grade 4 (grade C) or above in one or both subjects.
