Short Description
About the Course

Are you interested in helping to find solutions to the major challenges of the 21st century such as climate change, sustainable development, loss of biodiversity and habitats? Then Environmental Science will give you an excellent grounding to go onto university and then enter a wide range of exciting newly emerging careers (e.g. carbon recapture technology).

This subject must be studied alongside 2 other subjects to form an A Level Study Programme.

This is a 2 year classroom based academic qualification, however, due to the nature of what you will study there will also be sessions in the laboratories and also out in the environment.

What you will study

In the first year there are two main areas of study:

The living environment: wildlife conservation including the importance of biodiversity, habitat management and captive breeding and release programmes.

The physical environment: the impact of human activities on physical processes and how these can be managed, including climate change, exploitation of water and geological resources. Environmental issues such as melting ice sheets, coral reef decline and the discovery of new water sources are explored, with the emphasis on how to find solutions to these environmental problems through improved management and use of new technology. The issues are discussed to enable you to form well-balanced opinions which you can support with logical arguments and scientific evidence.

In the second year there are four main areas of study:

Energy Resources: Is a study of the importance of energy resources in both past and future developments in society. The impact of future energy supply problems, improvements in technology, sustainability and evaluation of existing technology will all be considered.

Pollution: Students should understand how the properties of materials and energy forms interact to result in environmental change. They should apply this knowledge to suggest solutions to minimise current pollution problems and prevent future problems. A number of different pollution issues will be covered including atmospheric pollution, acid rain, oil, thermal, pesticide and nutrient pollution of water, noise and radiation pollution.

Biological Resources: You will study different types of Agriculture and Aquatic food production systems and consider the use and importance of forest resources.

Sustainability: You will consider the role of dynamic equilibria in natural and human systems and how this understanding may be used to develop sustainable human societies. Energy, material cycles and the circular economy be covered.

During the course you will also learn a range of research methodologies and practical skills.

Access Method

You will need to sit 2x 3hr external A Level examination papers at the end of the 2nd year.

Progression

Your interest in environmental issues could take you along a number of paths beyond College. For example, ecology and wildlife conservation, geography, geology or climatology. There are many university courses in environmental science, either singly or in combination with other subjects.

Knowledge of environmental techniques, conservation and sustainability is becoming increasingly important in most organisations. Environmental experts are needed in business, industry and government as well as estate management, land reclamation, countryside management and conservation.

Environmental scientists are also employed by the following:

  • Water management and treatment companies
  • Waste management companies
  • Energy production industries
  • Mining and construction companies
  • Wildlife conservation organisations
  • Local and national government policy organisations
  • Town planning
  • Insurance companies
  • Science publication companies

And many more.

Entry Requirement

Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including GCSE Chemistry, Physics or Biology grade 5 or GCSE Combined Science grade 5, GCSE English grade 6 and GCSE Maths grade 5.
