About the Course
Maths In Context is a Level 3 certificate that can be studied alongside A Levels. It's suitable for students who achieved a Grade 4 (formerly Grade C) at GCSE Maths and wish to develop their practical maths skills for the real world, be it in work, study or everyday life. It helps to develop your mathematical skills and thinking, and supports courses such as A Level Psychology, and Sciences as well as technical and vocational qualifications.
What you will study
Maths In Context is about students doing meaningful mathematical problems to increase their confidence in using maths and to be better equipped for the mathematical demands of other courses, higher education, employment and life. The course will focus on: aspects of personal finance including calculating loans and mortgages and their repayments; financial terms such as terms AER and APR; explore statistical methods; use mathematical modelling to solve real life problems. On the course you will: explore everyday scenarios through fun ways of mathematical thinking; develop a better understanding of personal finance for adult life; gain a basic understanding of Statistics that will help you understand, analyse and critique statements from new papers, and other media.
During the 1st year there will be formal internal assessments which you will need to pass in order to progress into the 2nd year. At the end of the 2nd year there are two externally assessed tests.
Progress to a wide range of degree and other higher education courses, apprenticeships or employment.
Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above including GCSE Maths and English, or equivalent Level 2 qualification at grade Merit or above, and a good reference.
