Westminster Kingsway students and staff do battle in top chef competition

Thursday 1 March 2018

50 students and staff from Westminster Kingsway College’s school of Hospitality and Culinary Arts will be competing next week at the UK’s premier competition for chefs.

Hotelympia is the UK’s leading hospitality and foodservice event. It is only held once every two years and is at the ExCel centre in London from Monday 5th to Thursday 8th March.

A cornerstone of Hotelympia is the International Salon Culinaire – over 100 different culinary competitions taking place over the four days of the show. A showcase for the skills in the industry, the International Salon Culinaire includes categories as diverse as wedding cake decoration, designing and cooking a 4-course fine dining meal, preparing a vegetarian or vegan platter, and cocktail mixology. Westminster Kingsway students are entered in 32 of the competitions and have been training and preparing since before Christmas. Gold, silver, bronze and merit awards are up for grabs, so good luck to all our entrants!

As well as Westminster Kingsway students, two of our chef lecturers are competing too:

  • Ashley Spencer is in the Restaurant Platter for two competition
  • Chris Basten is competing in the blue riband event, the Parade des Chefs. Chris is the Captain of the Craft Guild of Chefs team, and he – along with Westminster Kingsway student Naomi Dowie.

Reflecting Westminster Kingsway’s standing in the culinary world, three of our expert lecturers (Vince Cottam, Tony Cameron and Simon Stocker) are judges in the competitions, while Jose Souto is the Vice Chairman of Judges for the Parade des Chefs.

As well as his judging duties, Advanced Practitioner in Culinary Arts Simon Stocker has coordinated all our competition entries this year. He said: “Hotelympia is the UK’s number 1 show for the hospitality and culinary world, and the International Salon Culinaire is one of the most respected culinary competitions around.

“We are delighted that so many of our students have reached the high standard required to compete and represent Westminster Kingsway college. The college has a brilliant reputation in the culinary field and we hope that this year’s students will carry on our fine tradition of success at Hotelympia.”

Westminster Kingsway is one of the UK's best colleges for hospitality and catering
