WKC alumnus, Selin Kiazim narrowly misses out on winning BBC’s Great British Menu main final

Friday 14 July 2017

Selin Kiazum, a Westminster Kingsway graduate, made it to the final two of the BBC’s Great British Menu’s main course final. She was narrowly beaten by fellow professional chef, Michael Bremner.

After Selin’s success, we asked her old lecturer and mentor, Vince Cottam, to tell us a little bit about her accomplishments, and what she was like as a student.

“From the very first day I saw Selin in my kitchen, I knew she had great potential.

“I and the whole college are extremely proud of her achievements on the Great British Menu, she is an inspiring chef and has already accomplished so much at such a young age.

“As a student from 2005-2008, She was hard working and exceptional, in both the kitchen and the classroom. She wanted to know every detail about food, and not just the food itself. She would want to know what province it was from, and whether it was ethically sourced; all the things that good chefs want to know about. In her book she wrote an acknowledgement to me, saying, “You kickstarted so many opportunities for me and have always believed in me,” which is great because she has never forgotten the people who have helped her get to where she is today.

“Just recently she took time out of her busy workplace to spend the day with us and judge our third-year students’ practical exams. I take great pride when students see her and know that she was a student here and that she has competed on Great British Menu. She is an exceptional student who is proud to say she is from Westminster Kingsway College.

“Selin today still remains a great ambassador for our college and remains a very good friend of myself and my wife. We still laugh about how on her very last day, she made a joke about me, and I made her clean every dirty deep fat fryer in the college!”

Along with Selin Kiazim, alumni from this award-winning college include Dennis Mwakulua, Sophie Wright, Ben Murphy, Jamie Oliver and Ainsley Harriott, and we’re sure there will be lots more in the future!
